Gino Barteli was a well known cyclist in Italy and won the Tour de France in 1938, shortly before the start of WWII. Only recently has his true heroics during the war come to light. He used his bike and cycling ability to help save over 800 Jewish people from certain death by transporting papers in the tubes of his bike, for these people to be able leave the country for safer places.

I was introduced to this amazing picture book recently and what a superb book it is! The message to be curious, adventurous, patient, and brave, and most of all, be brave was a reminder I needed this week.

On the eve of our return to school, I thought this was very appropriate for the occasion. The war in her country has ended, and Ayobami is so excited to go to school. Her father sends her with a pencil and paper. On her walk to school, she encounters many fearsome animals, who only let her pass when she promises to learn to write their names for them. She learns her letters and reading at school and follows through on her promise to the animals. How will she explain to her father that her pencil is worn down and her paper is used up. I love this book because it is about her love of reading and writing, and how excited she is to learn. May we all be as excited about the learning ahead this year!

This #picturebook took my breath away both because of the beautiful illustrations and the amazing story. Because Beethoven wrote beautiful music, Franz Schubert was inspired to write Symphony no. 8 in B-minor. From there we learn about all the “because ofs” that lead a young girl to becoming a orchestra maestro directing her own piece of music centuries later. Such a phenomenal story by Mo Willems.
