I can see why this books has garnered so much attention. One day a neighbourhood discovers a tree has been trimmed into an artistic image, and they continue to discover new tree art everyday. A young boy is curious about who is doing this and discovers an older man who comes and does this work every night. He is invited to join him in his artistry and gets to experience the joy it brings the neighbourhood and how it brings them together. Stunning pictures and beautiful story.

This sweet story follows the life of a young girl on a farm as she grows into adulthood. Alongside her story, we see the story of the old truck, and the relationship it has to the family. The ending is one of the perfect kinds that leave you thinking "of course!".

Before even getting into the story, I was taken my the art in this book. Done all through paper cut-outs, the illustrations add so much to this refugee story. This wordless picture book tells the story of a family escaping the violence in Vietnam and moving, at much risk to themselves, to Canada for a better life.

This is such an interesting book with a lesson I haven't read about in a picture book before. Because childcare isn't available one evening, Daniel must accompany his parents to their night job of cleaning an office building ("The Paper Kingdom"). He is surprised to discover the mess of others that his parents must clean up. His parents explain that the "dragons" who work for the "king" work hard and they need to clean up after them. This upsets Daniel a great deal because he doesn't understand why these "dragons" don't clean up after themselves. Daniel leaves that night planning to be "King" one day and be kind to his dragons, but he will ensure that they clean up after themselves, so his parents won't have to.

Sometimes trying something new is scary, but not when you have someone supporting you each step of the way.

The beautiful illustrations of this book caught my interest first, and the story just made this book better. A young boy questions why things are a certain way for him yet another way for the homeless man he sees around. This is a fantastic story that teaches empathy and how everyone has their own story.
