A Few Of My Favourite Books

I have read tons of fantastic books over the years, but I have a few ultimate favourites. As time passes, this list will change, but here are my most favourite books at this point in my reading life.

Anne of Green Gables

Anne of Green Gables is one of those books that set me on my journey as a young reader. I got the whole series the year I was in grade 6, and to this day it is still one of my most favourite books of all time. I still own my original copy from 1989 (different cover than pictured here). A Canadian classic.

Cinder

Cinder is a more recent read. I had had it on my TBR pile for ages, and regret not reading earlier. Cinderella is my favourite Fairy Tale, but this fantastic dystopian twist on the original story knocks it out the park in terms of adventure, Girl Power, and dystopian edginess. It has become a favourite read among my juniour high readers too.

Ida, Always

Oh how I love this book. It came to me from a colleague's recommendation and what a jewel this book is. I can't even guess how many times I have read this to classes, young and old, and I still cry almost every time I read it. A must have in all picture book collections.

Lovely War

Lovely War was another book recommendation for me, and oh what an amazing book it is. Set in World War 2, the plot is interweaved with Greek Mythology as multiple well known Gods and Goddesses tell the story through their perspective and how they have impacted the lives of these young people in love in such a dark time.

No Fixed Address

I almost instantly loved No Fixed Address. It had such an impact on me that I made it my next read aloud in my class, and I was so thrilled when the kids loved it as much as I did. I can't even count how many times I have shared or read this book with kids. I love its Canadian content and that it's a story that far too many kids in this country know all too well.

Refugee

Refugee is a book that will stay with me forever. The sorrow and heartbreak in this book is unlike any I have encountered before, yet the hope of each of the main characters is what makes me love it so much. This book has made me a fan of Gratz and all of his books. Absolutely must have in all libraries and check out his other books too!

Save me a Seat

Save Me a Seat is a simple story with a powerful reminder of the value of kindness. Told over one week, we hear the story of Ravi and Joe's first week of school, and the struggles they have fitting in. I love it, kids love it, and definitely a book to be shared together as a class.

The Legend of Rock Paper Scissors

I love this book for its humour and obtuseness. Kids (and even teenagers) have gotten a laugh out of this book. It's a regular gift suggestion I give to adults wondering what to buy the young readers in their lives, and it's always on my list of great read alouds.

The Remarkable Journey of Coyote Sunrise

I had read other books from Geimenhart before reading this one and always enjoyed them. This one hit me in the heart and has become a frequent read aloud in my classrooms, and is always on my list of book recommendations to other teachers. A must have in all school libraries.

We Don't Eat our Classmates

We Don't Eat our Classmates is such fun to read and such a joy for kids of all ages to listen to or read. Dinosaurs are always a hit with young readers, but a young dinosaur going to school WITH HUMANS and having to work really hard to not eat them??? Can't get much better than that.
