A short but powerful graphic novel about one girls experience in a residential school.

Considering the upcoming 20th anniversary of 9/11 and what is currently happening in Afghanistan, this book came to me at the perfect time. This lovely novel-in-verse begins on 9/11 when Abbey hears about the events unfolding in NYC, by her teachers at her school in Tennessee. Students are sent home, where she learns that her Aunt Rose, who works in the World Trade centre, is missing. Her mom is headed to NYC to be with her sister’s family. Not long after that she finds out her dad, who is in the army, will be headed to Afghanistan. This middle grade novel delves in the themes of loss, identity and family ties. Poignantly written and an honest reflection of what families faced that day and for a long time after 9/11.

Loved this book so much! From my favourite genre of historical fiction this beauty is about having the strength to fight for what you want and being brave enough to find a better life. Even better, there's a sequel.

When I was in high school in the 90s, I have a very distinct memory of 3 girls who had moved to Canada from the war torn countries of Bosnia And Serbia. They hated each other with such a passion that I often wondered what had happened in their countries that would leave them hating each other so much. Now I get it. This book opened my eyes to a moment in history that I knew very little about. The war and genocide that happened was horrific and the trauma these people lived through is unimaginable. A thoughtfully and honest written novel about a Bosnian Muslim girl and the horrors she and her family endured during Bosnian war.

Just finished this fantastic book. Friendship, figuring out who you are and our need to be extraordinary are themes in this novel.

Hit a bit of a reading rut recently, but what a way to get back into reading. I LOVED Yang's Front Desk and the sequel Three Keys did not disappoint. Mia, Lupe, Hank, Jason, and the weeklies are all back in this fabulous sequel. The governor's race is on and part of this race is the Prop 187, a bill to limit the rights of illegal immigrants. Mia and her friends are at it again to help those impacted by this bill and to fight for what is right.

Another fabulous middle-grade. I read this last year to my class of grade fours and LOVED it. I love it for great storyline, the historical teaching, and for the new perspectives it gave both me and my students.

Evelyn Hugo has decided to share her life story on her own terms, with unknown journalist, Monique. Monique doesn't understand why she was requested but takes this amazing opportunity to write about superstar Evelyn Hugo, and perhaps understand why she was chosen for this. Beginning with her first husband, Evelyn shares her life story with brutal honesty and no regret. An enthralling story that covers decades of Hollywood history with passion and intrigue.

Oh my heart! What a beautiful story! The accolades this book has received are so deserved and this is one of my best reads of the year, for sure.
It’s January, 1986 and the world is waiting for the upcoming Challenger voyage. Centering about siblings, Bird, Fitch and Cash, we discover each of their stories intertwined, both metaphorically and literally, with what they are learning at school about the Challenger Voyage and space. Topics of forgiveness, family turmoil, dreaming big and sibling love are all explored in this magnificent story. A must read and must have for all libraries.
